Goods produced in England had no import duty when they were imported into India. With cheaper European goods in the market, naturally the demands for Indian goods went down drastically. The British government also imposed heavy taxes on Indian traders and manufacturers, crippling them further. 

The British government oppressed the people in many ways. Indian trade and commerce was in ruins. Indians had no legal rights, they could be imprisoned without even a trial. The forceful implementation of English education created jobs, but began to slowly destroy Indian languages and cultures. Also, religious conversion in many quarters resulted in dissatisfaction. 

The Santhals in Bengal rebelled in 1855, and the sepoys in the Company's army soon after. After a violent outbreak at Meerut, thelast  Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah was put once more on the throne in Delhi. Rulers such as Hazrat Mahal, Tatya Tope and Kunwar Singh joined the fight.
