India, as a whole was dependent on the agriculture sector as it was the primary source of occupation and livelihood during the colonial time. However, there were some states which saw a rise in the agricultural workforce (people engaged in agriculture sector) such as Orissa, Rajasthan and Punjab. On the other hand, some states saw a fall in the agricultural workforce such as Andhra Pradesh, Mumbai, etc. The major factors that led to such regional variations included the occurrence of monsoons, availability of alternative means of livelihood/occupations, etc.
