The Governor of the States of India is appointed by the President of India for a period of five years. A Governor is appointed on the advice of the Union Council of Ministers, or in reality on the advice of the Prime Minister.

To be a governor, the person should first satisfy the eligibility requirements according to Part VI of the Constitution of India :

  1. He/She must be a citizen of India.
  2. He/She should be at least 35 years of age.
  3. He/She should not be a member of either house of Parliament or house of the state legislature.
  4. He/She should not be holding any office of profit.

The governor is “appointed” by the incumbent central government. Normally, governors appointed by the previous govt. are removed by the incoming govt. especially, when the ruling parties lose power. This is merely for political reasons.
