Mansabdar was the generic term for the military -type grading of all imperial officials of the Mughal Empire. The mansabdars governed the empire and commanded its armies in the emperor's name. Though they were usually aristocrats, they did not form a feudal aristocracy, for neither the offices nor the estates that supported them were hereditary.

The term is derived from Mansab, meaning 'rank'. Hence, Mansabdar literally means rank-holder.

To bring about greater order in the system of military administration , akbar introduced the mansabdari system [ a system which consisted of a hierarchy if offices in AD 1574.

Every cicil or military official {mansabdar} was given a jagir or a piece of land according to his zator ank.

The mansabdars drew their salaries from the revenue of the land. The mansabdars had to maintain a certain number of horses for the emperor's use. The size of the jagir depended on thezat and the savar [ introduced to define how many cavalry a military commander was expected to maintain ].

Hope this helps you
