WHO WAS KANISHKA

Kanishka was a king who belonged to the Kushana dynasty in South India. His capital was at Peshawar which is located in present-day Pakistan. He was a patron of Buddhism and organised a Buddhist council during his reign. His rule extended from Oxus river in north-west to across Mathura in the south and included Kashmir as well. The famous Buddhist poet Ashvaghosha lived during his reign.

Kanishka (Kanishka the Great), (Sanskritकनिष्कBactrian languageΚανηϸκιMiddle Chinese: 迦腻色伽 (Jianisejia)) was an emperor of the Kushan Empire, ruling an empire extending from Bactria to large parts of northern India in the 2nd century of the common era, and famous for his military, political, and spiritual achievements. His main capital was at Purushpura (Peshawar in present day northwestern Pakistan) with regional capitals at the location of the modern city of Taxila in PakistanBegram in Afghanistan and Mathura in India.
