Who were the Orientalists ?

Dear Student,

Orientalists wanted Indian scholars to teach the “vernacular” languages, about local customs and laws, translate and interpret ancient texts. They felt in order to rule and establish its control the British must do the following:

a. British ought to promote Indian rather than Western learning.
b. They felt that institutions should be set up to encourage the study of ancient Indian texts and teach Sanskrit and Persian literature and poetry
c. The officials also thought that Hindus and Muslims should be taught subjects which they were familiar with.
d. This  would not only help the British learn the Indian culture, but would help them to consolidate their power.
e. Oriental learning should be the basis of British rule in India.
