why a galvanometer is not used to measure current in a given circuit?

It is because of two reasons...

Firstly, a Galvanometer is a highly current sensitive device which would shows large deflections even with the passage of small amount of currents through it.

Secondly, it has a very high resistance value which can alter the magnitude of current flowing through it.

We can however convert it into an ammeter by shunting it properly.

because galvanometer is a current sensitive device, hence it cannot withstand large current
