why a magnetic compass always aligns itself along the North-South direction ?

The needle of a magnetic compass is made out of a magnetic substance which responds in the presence of magnetic field. The reason why it aligns itself to the north south (polar) direction is because the magnetic intensity is greatest at those polar points.

So, one point of the needle seeks the north pole while the other point seeks the south pole (of a magnet).
