Acetylation leads to cross conjugation of the lone pair on nitrogen, thus reducing its +M effect because of which the ring becomes less activated to electrophilic substitution, if we do not convert aniline to acetanilide then we will get tarry oxidation products plus more amount of para and meta nitroaniline
