Why an empty flask or an anti suction device is put in between the generative flask and water trough, during the generation of HCL acid?

To prevent back suction of water into the generative flask where the acid is being produced. Otherwise water will react with the acid and result in the production of enormous amount of heat energy due to which the flask will break and result in explosion or injuries.
