why are machines often oiled or greased?

Friction is a very problematic force in machines. It causes their parts to wear away.Lubricants like  oil or grease reduce friction by making surfaces smooth and thus, well lubricated machines run longer and more efficiently.

i thinh the answer to this question is to prevent the machinesfrom rusting, so that it can run smoothly without any trouble.

eg: bicycle's chain.

MACHINE PARTS OR MACHINERY ARE OFTEN OILED OR GREASED TO ORDER THAT FRICTION IS REDUCED. EXCESS FRICTION CAN LEAD TO WEAR AND TEAR IN THE MACHINERY.

they are oiled or gresed to reduce friction between the machine parts ...... If they would not be greased or oiled ,thenthey will produce heat and due to large amount of heat they might melt or get damaged because most of them are made up of steel ......
