why are red tides caused and why are they harmful

Red tide (algal bloom) is a phenomenon  which is caused by the rapid multiplication of some species of dinoflagellates. The algae multiplies rapidly and becomes so numerous that they discolour coastal water. Major factors influencing red tide event includes warm ocean surface temperature ,low salinity, high nutrient content, calm seas and rain followed by sunny days during the summer months. This algal bloom may deplete oxygen in the water or may release toxins that can cause illness in humans and can  also kill many marine animals.

Red tides are caused by the dinoflagellates. They mainly lives in the marine water. When their number in the sea water increases then the sea water appears to be red in colour and this results in the red tides.

The toxins released by such large number of the dinoflagellates are harmful to other aquatic organisms and it may also kill them.

red tides are caused due to  over growth of the some dinoflagellate species .
they are very toxic in nature , due to their over growth in sea water the sea water appears to be red in colour which we call it as red tides . as they release toxins gradually the level of oxygen in sea water decreases which is harmful to aquatic  plants and animals.

Red tide is a phenomenon caused by algal blooms (Wikipedia definition) during which algae become so numerous that they discolour coastal waters (hence the name "red tide"). The algal bloom may also deplete oxygen in the waters and/or release toxins that may cause illness in humans and other animals.
