why are xylem vessels formed only of dead cells?

Xylerm vessels are made up of dead cells as this adaptation helps in efficient transportation of water absorbed by roots to other parts of plants because if these cells were living then it would have absorbed water for its survival and green parts of the plants that require water for photosynthesis might not have received adequate amounts of water.
