Why can't reproduction be an all-inclusive defining characteristic of living of living organisms?

Dear Student,

Reproduction can not be considered as characteristic defining feature of living organisms as in single celled organism growth and reproduction is synonym to increased in no. of cells . In multicellular organisms reproduction mostly refers to sexual reproduction and some of them reproduce asexually also. Also unicellular organism reproduce by cell division.
