Why cells are called the basic unit of life when they in turn are made up of atoms?

Dear Student,
Cells make up the smallest level of a living organism such as yourself and other living things. The cellular level of an organism is where the metabolic processes occur that keep the organism alive. That is why the cell is called the fundamental unit of life.
A cell is the smallest unit of life because it is the smallest unit that can carry out all of the functions of life. An atom is smaller than a cell, but an atom is a single particle that is a component of all matter, living and nonliving.
