why Congress split in 1907?

Dear student,
The Congress split  took place in 1907 due to difference in ideologies. The Moderates were opposed to the use of boycott. They felt that it involved the use of force. The extremists , on the other hand, believed in aggressive forms of struggle like strikes, hartals and boycott to attain their goal of Swaraj.

The Extremists wanted to expand  the Boycott and Swadeshi Movement to regions outside Bengal and also take all forms of associations (such as government service, law courts, legislative councils, etc.) within the boycott programme and thus give a call for  a nationwide mass movement.

The Moderates, on the other hand, were not in favour of extending the movement beyond Bengal and were against boycott of councils and similar associations. They  favoured constitutional methods to protest against the partition of Bengal.
