why did albert hate his lodgings? what would he do to divert his mind?

Albert did not grudge the poor quality of the food, the uncomfortable lodgings, or the general dirt and squalor of the place that he was staying at. However, he could not stand the consistent violence that was a norm in the slum that his rented room was in. His landlady's husband was abusive and he beat his wife, who in turn beat his children.
To divert his mind, he would read books on science and play his violin. Sadly, after some time, his landlady asked him to stop the latter.

He disliked it because the atmosphere was not good. There are many examples sited in the text book. Like People would gamble and the ladlady would hit her kids and her husband would come home and hit her
He was only happy that he had his own room
He would play musical instrument but the landlady would shout at him

He disliked it because the atmosphere wasn't good. In the textbook it has explained such factor why it isn't good like the landlady used to hit the children and the husband would get back home drunk and hit the landlady. He would let his mind divert from this by either reading geography or let himself into the world of music.
