Why did Ashoka renounce war?

Dear Student
The war of Kalinga was a turning point in the life of Ashoka and a remarkable incident in history. Kalinga was located in modern day Odisha. It was a very important kingdom as it played an important role in controlling the trade routes with Southeast Asia. Ashoka fought a war to gain control of this important kingdom. Although he won the war, he was adversely affected by the bloodshed and damage that was caused by the war. He decided never to fight a war again and lived a life according to Dhamma.
