Why did Mr. Otis wake up from his sleep?

due to noise of chains used by the ghost ,it was not polished for many years and was making too much noise mr. otis was disturbed and he woke up. he saw his watch it was one o' clock. he checked his pulse to be sure he was not feverish. then very calmly he took a bottle of lubricator and opened the door he saw the ghost standing before him.he looked like very old man.his eyes burnt like coal he was in rags and heavy chains hung from his wrists and ankles. he gave him a bottle of lubricator but the ghost became angry and threwed the bottle violently on floor.
