Why did Mr Ottisoffer to give thejewels back to lord Canterville? what was his reaction ?

Dear student,

For Mr. Ottis, the jewels were too priceless and they belonged to high dignity of British aristocracy. They looked out of place in the possession of those people who had been the product of republican simplicity. Above all, being the legal descendant of Sir Simon, the jewels were the property of Lord Canterville. Keeping these things in mind, Mr. Ottis offered jewel back to Lord Canterville.
Lord Canterville to substantiate his refusal to accept the jewels put forward some reasons. Firstly, Virginia had been an angel to Sir Simon by helping him embrace eternal peace and the forgiveness of the providence. Secondly, Mr. Ottis had brought the chase along with its ghost. This made him the owner of everything connected with the mansion. So, he was the real owner of the jewels. Thirdly, the jewels had been given to Virginia by the ghost himself, so they belonged to her. Keeping these in mind, Lord Canterville refused to take those jewels.
