Japan was in war with America. At this time Dr.Sadao helped an enemy soldier. The servants were very shocked to see an American in their house. They felt that Dr.Sadao was not patriotic and wanted to help an enemy. This made them think that their life is in danger if Dr.Sadao is caught by the police. Moreover they were already poor and cannot deal with the troubles given by the higher authorities. So, they belived that the best and safest way to escape is to leave the house.
