Why did Shahid say for himself, "A national poet maybe, but not a nationalist poet??

Dear student,

Kashmir forms the centre of Ali's world. As he grew up in Kashmir, his poetry reciprocates his love
for  the land of Kashmir, his love for the beauty of Kashmir and the impact of marginalization and victimization of people due to regional and political turmoil. The image of beautiful Kashmir is repeatedly visited by Ali. His poems throw light on Kashmir's colonial history. His poetry expresses concern for the people of Kashmir due to the political and social unrest. The feeling of alienation and exile reoccur in his poetry and explore the angst of the Kashmiris. So he can be termed as a national poet. But, his poetry (in no way) is detrimental to the interests of other nations. That is why, he cannot be called a nationalist poet.
