Why did Sophie feel a tightening in her throat ?

Sophie watched her mother's back stooped over the sink and wondered at the incongruity of the delicate bow which fastened her apron strings. The delicate bow and the crooked back seemed antithetical to each other and she seemed to read the future that lay for her. The evening had already blacked in the windows and the small room was steamy from the alcove. The heavy-breathing man in his vest at the table and the washing piled up in the corner seemed to add to the clutter. It was then that she felt the tightening in her throat due to the circumstances which had hemmed her in.
