Why did the company feel the need to invest in land and improve the agriculture?

The East India Company felt the need to invest on land and improve the agriculture for its own benefit. They were very lazy and wanted the Indians to work hard for them. They wanted raw materials as industrialization had begun in Britain. The EIC itself did not have any fertile land for the cultivation of crops. It therefore felt the need to encourage agriculture among peasants and wanted profit.
