Why did the peddler sign himself as Captain von Stahle when he wrote the letter to Edla Willmansson? Please answer soon.

edla had treated him as if he were a real captain, with love and respect.whn the peddler decided to chnge hs ways and wrote that letter to edla, he wanted to thank her for treating him as if he were a real captain even though she knew he wasnt. sinnce she had raised him to the ranks of a captain and treated him like one he signed his letter as captain von stahle.
