The peddler signed himself as Captain Von Stahle because he was touched by the kindness and love shown by the Ironmaster's daughter, Edla. He had never received any respect and love from anyone in the world and therefore when Edla saved him from being caught by the sheriffs, he was transformed to a good human being. Thus, he left a letter for her and signed himself as captain Von stahle
