why did the peddler think that the world was a rattrap?

Peddler used the metaphor rattrap for the world because as the rattrap is a small cage sort of structure in which the BAIT (temptation) is put and the rats get tempted or attracted towards it and as a result get caught in it ,similarly in this world there are many baits or temptations for us in which we get caught because o our temptations.

The peddler says so because- he consider all the luxuries in like as a cheese in the bait and as a mouse would ordinarily go for the cheese without realising that it  is a trap, all humans go for luxuries and forget the consequences that would happen in the later life.

The world had never been kind to the peddler. So, he got unusual joy to think ill of the world. His pastime was to think of people he knew who had let themselves be caught in the dangerous snare of the world, and of others who were still circling around the bait.
