why do birds don't get electric shock on a high voltage power lines

Dear student,
Current flows in a complete circuit. If circuit breaks somewhere current will not flow through it. So when birds sitting on cables they don’t complete the circuit and therefore do not receive a shock. Larger birds such as swans are frequently killed by electricity wires because their wings touch two wires and make a circuit which results in electrocution.
