Why do Earthworms generally seen wriggling above the ground during heavy rains ?

After heavy rains, we can generally observe earthworms wriggling above the ground. But earthworms do not move to ground to prevent themselves from drowning, instead they can survive for several weeks under water provided sufficient oxygen is there dissolved in it for their survival. So, if the dissolved oxygen is less then they move out to avoid suffocation.

Apart from that they move to the surface as the environment favorable for them, it is moist and they can easily crawl along the ground without dehydrating to find new spaces and to mate.

when it rains the earthworms living in underground have no air or space inside so to take oxygen and get space the earthworms have to come out. hope it will help

this is because when it rains, the water occupies all the space between the sand and stone peicesand the earthworms do not get enough oxygen.so for respiration they need to come out of the ground.
