Why do germ cells have half the number of chromosomes?

Germ cells have half the number of chromosome because after fusion of male and female germ cell the zygote will have diploid number of chromosome in it which is normal. But if there were more than half number of chromosome in germ cell than after fusion of germ cells the zygote would have abnormal number of chromosome in it. It is so to maintain the consistent number of chromosomes in each species of organisms. If the number of chromosomes in not reduced to half in the germ cells, the zygote or the offspring will have double the number of chromosomes that in parents and so on which will disturb the body design and function of organisms".
