Leaves appear green because they contain a pigment called chlorophyll. This pigment absorbs all wavelengths of white light from the sun except green. The green is not absorbed, rather it is reflected back, thus everything with chlorophyll appears green.

Leaves get their green color from chlorophyll, which is the key element in photosynthesis. Chlorophyll gathers carbon dioxide and sunlight, and together with the water that seeps through the roots, transforms energy into food for the plant.
