Why do legs and arms have tube like bones?

Dear student,

The bones of arms and legs are long and composed of a shaft (diaphysis) with two flared ends (epipyhses). Diaphysis resembles a hollow-cylinder,made of compact bones which makes it resistant to bending and makes it light-weighted. The inner cavity of diaphysis is composed of yellow marrow that stores fat and it itself is surrounded by red-marrow( that makes red blood cells).

Regards.

1.Hollow bone require less calcium and it's weight is much less although hollow bones strength is comparable to solid bone. So weight of skeleton is much decrease.
2. Bone marrow is present in the cavity of bone, which is essential for formation of blood cells.
