why do owls have large number of rod cells and few number of cones on the retina? please explain.
Cones are sensitive to bright light whereas rod cells are sensitive to dim light. As you are aware, owls usually go in search of food when it is almost dark. At that time, there is dim light and rod cells are required to see in dim light. Hence, rod cells are more in number. Owls don't usually go out during the day so they need not have a large number of cones.
