why do people lived near valleys?

People first settled near river valleys because:
1) the land is very fertile to grow crops/agriculture development.
2) they were getting water for their daily purposes.
3) irrigation purposes.
4) flat land.

River Valleys are most fertile region and the first human settlement were all done to do agriculture. The fertile soil in these regions were best suited for agriculture. Hence people first settled near river valleys.

When the rivers flow from high mountains they carry with them the eroded soil which eventually settles at the river banks when they flow through the plains.
This eroded soil is extremely fertile for agriculture and thus these areas are highly populated compared to hill stations where the soil is not apt for agriculture because of its infertility.
