why do play become increaslily political in 20 century?

Dear Student,
The 20th century saw the rise and fall of colonial powers. It therefore also saw a rise of democracies all over the world. Unlike the themes of surrealism and expressionism, 20th century plays dealt with realism.
To understand this on-going trend of colonization and loss of territory, theatre workers wished to explore the political genre.
Also, the 20th century witnessed plenty of wars, probably the greatest of world wars. Hence, plays became increasingly political in the 20th century.
