Why do raisins and apricots swell up when placed in water? Name phenomenon involved?

raisins and apricot swell up when placed in water because it contains lesser concentration of water than in beaker and as a result the water moves from region of higher concentration to lower. i.e. from beaker to raisin n apricot. this phenomenon is known as osmosis.

Raisins and apricots swell up in water if the solution is a hypertonic solution . i.e. water in higher concentration If the solution is a hypertonic solution , water will move from a region of higher concentration to lower concentration through a semi-permeable due to the phenomenon called osmosis .
