Why do scolidon swims constantly?

Dear Student,

There are three possible reasons for Scoliodon to do constant swimming:
  • They are cartilaginous fishes, and they do not have swim bladders so they have to maintain the buoyancy, by keep swimming.
  • Their respiratory system remains active by continuous flow of water in and out of it.
  • They are poikilothermic or cold blooded organisms so they need to do the mechanical work to maintain their internal body temperature.
Regards.

Scoliodon is a Chondrichthyes/ cartilaginous fish. This group of fishes do not possess an air bladder so if they remain static they would drown. In order to prevent themselves from drowning they have to swim constantly.
