Ships are always in contact with the sea water , which contains salt . Salt accelerates the process of rusting because if its properties . If you like my answer please give me a thumbs up !!

Ships suffer alot because they always stay in coastal areas and if the particular country or a particular state will keep painting it then there would be a huge monetary loss to that country or to that state.
