Why do tailors use a measuring tape but a cloth merchant uses a metre rod to measure length?

The tailors use measuring tape for perfection and also they have time for measuring all the objects. But the cloth merchant have to deal with many customers measuring all the kinds of cloth. And hey also don't have enough time. I hope it helps
