why do the arteries have thick elastic walls?

When the blood is pumped by heart, it comes at very high pressure and to withstand that high pressure the arteries have thick and elastic walls.

They have thick and elastic walls so that they do not get cut easily.....

They are thick so that they don't get cut when we get a bruise....

 The blood circulation in the arteries is very fast.If the artery wall was to be thin it would cause the tearing of the artery and lead to severe bleeding. Therefore the artery wall are thick to prevent such circumstances.
