why do we need to conserve water? Explain.

Dear student,

Water is essential for all living beings. There can be no life without it. Water exists in three forms: solid, liquid and vapour. Almost 71% of the earth is covered with water, but usable water (fresh water) is present in very low amounts.

We need to be worried about the wastage and take heed to conserve water because -
  1. Water is one of the basic necessities of life.
  2. In some places there is an acute shortage of water, taps running dry, long queues for water fights, marches and protests for demand of water have become a common sight, especially during summers.
  3. Plants wilt and ultimately dry-up if they are not watered for a few days
  4. Many people al over the world lack access to safe water, this in turn leads to several diseases and deaths.
  5. It is estimated that more than one third of the people in the world could face water scarcity in years to come.
Moreover, there is an uneven distribution of water, much of which has resulted from human activities like -
  • Rapid growth of industries
  • Increasing population,
  • Growing irrigation requirements and
  • Mismanagement of water resources.
Thus the need of the hour is to conserve our water resources -
  1. Unnecessary use of water and overdrawing from groundwater should be avoided.
  2. Recharge of water to the ground should be increased.
  3. Water should be used economically.
  4. Rain water harvesting should be followed.
  5. Trickle drip irrigation and other procedures should be adopted to use water judiciously.
  6. Closing taps when not in use and other habits should be inculcated to save water.
One of the very basis of life on earth is the presence of water, it is a precious commodity that is under threat due to human activities and must be conserved to ensure that life perpetuates on Earth.
