Why do we say 'Is it I?'  instead of 'Is it me ?'

The use of 'I' vs. 'me' is dependent upon whether the speaker is the subject of the sentence or the object of it.
'I' is the first person singular subject pronoun, it refers to the person performing the action of a verb. For example: I want to eat.
'Me' is an object pronoun, that it refers to the person that the action of a verb is being done to. For example: My mother told me to eat.
