why do you think development is relative term ?

Dear Student,

 The notion of development is relative as it makes varied references and means different thing  to different to different people and in varied situations.

Development is a very broad and comprehensive concept. It has been interpreted in different ways by different people. 

a. Development to some would mean rise in per capita income and growth in the economy. It gives us the quantitative aspect of development.
b. Development also implies leading a good quality life where individuals develop themselves to the fullest. It includes providing good education, health facilities. Some people may look into such an aspect of development
c. Apart from that people may have different  developmental goals.For example, for people living in a state of abject poverty, development would mean getting basic necessities of life fulfilled. Similarly, for a weaker section of society, like  Schedule caste group it would imply end of social discrimination , respect and dignity.
d. 
. It is also important to realise that Development is not only based on material or monetary things , rather on a large number of non material things which are also important in life and are required to give emotional, social and Psychological contentment to people. There are other factors that account's for person's growth and development other than money.

. A sense of security , self esteem, are all essential goals of life which are required to fulfil individuals Psychological needs.
 f. Further, the concept of development is interpreted differently by different people in different situations.. People have different development goals and accordingly work towards attaining them. For some it would mean stability and job security, For an adivasi development would imply being able to restore his customary rights and not being displaced. These examples explains different life situations of different people.
g. Further. one' s definition of development may conflict with others.
h. It is thus, in this context we refer to development as a relative term as it is viewed from varied perspectives
i. Rather there is no rigid straight jacket definition of development.
