Why does a tuning fork remain vibrating even when we hold it by the handle and why does it stop when we touch it's prongs?

The vibrations of the tuning fork stop when its prongs are touched but they do not stop when held by a handle or the stem is touched. It is so because the prongs are vibrating perpendicular to their length whereas the stem is vibrating along its length.

when you hit a tunig frok you are holding the handle as well, so when you it the prongs,the handle and the hand which is holding the handle will vibrate. but the other hand( which is not touching the fork) does not vibrate, so when you touch the prongs all the energy in the fork is transferred to the hand and thus stops vibrating

when u hit the tuning fork with a hard surface it starts vibrating this vibration remains until any external force acts on it.the kinetic energy in this tuning fork causes it to vibrate.when any external for such as ur hand comes in contact with this fork the kinetic nergy transfers into ur hand thus its stops ocillating(vibrating)
