Why does AlCl3 exist as a dimer?

AlCl3 is a electron deficient species. In order to complete the octet of Aluminum, the molecule dimerize to form Al2Cl6 in which electron are added to aluminum octet by coordinate bond by Chlorine atom as shown in figure below.

It is due to formation of coordinate bond between aluminium and chlorine
