Why does an IC slope downwards?

Indifference curve shows various combination of two goods that derive the same level of satisfaction. So if we increase the consumption of anyone the consumption of other will decrease. That leads to the downward slope of indifference curve.

Indifference curve is downward sloping because if a consumer decides to have more units of one good,he will have to sacrifice some units ogf another good so that the level of satisfaction remains the same.
