Why does Frank fell that Mr. Crocker-Harris is shrivelled up on the

inside?

The statement is by Taplow, the student of fifth grade. He told Frank Hunter, a young science teacher, that Crocker Harris was not a sadist. However, he was a man with no feelings. He was all shrivelled up inside like a nut and he seemed to hate people to like him.

Crocker Harris had served the school for fifteen long years and was taking a premature retirement as he was to join a new office. His wife Mille was not faithful to him. They had been married for years and Harris had knowledge of all the affairs she had had and yet was not willing to divorce her. She was young and vivacious and this time was involved with Frank Hunter. All this had made him a tough man who had no emotions left in him. His experiences with his life had taught him to lock his self within and not express. He came to be known as “the Hitler of the lower fifth” in the school.  Also, the school was not ready to give him pension due to his early retirement. Thus, he was the way he was and the students and the administration were not too fond of him.
