Why does metal feel cold?

Metals feel cold because they are good conductors of heat. When we touch metals the heat from our body gets transmitted into the metal very quickly and in return we feel the metal surface cold.

Our skin temperature is around 32-35ºC apparently, which is around 10-15ºC warmer than the air and the actual temperature of (unheated) things in a room.Objects made from materials that are good heat conductors, like metal, feel cold (even in the summer) because our own body heat flows easily and quickly into these materials when we touch them .. quicker than heat from our blood system can replace it, so the skin cools down and we sense this as cold.Good insulators, like wool (and other fabrics) and polystyrene, can be better insulators than the air (less convection loss) .. which causes less heat to be lost than normal, so our skin temperature may increase a little bit and we think we are touching something warm. All the different objects that are left in a room will be at the same temperature no matter what material they are made from .. but they may not feel the same to us.
