why does mrs umney recover after she fainted? Do you think this is a humourous moment.

Dear Student,

On seeing Mrs. Umney faint, Mrs. Otis exclaimed loudly to Mr. Otis about the difficulty of managing a woman who is prone to fainting. The minister immediately replied that fainting bouts should be charged to the lady as they would charge breakages. In a very short while, Mrs. Umney came to consciousness, almost as if she had heard Mr. Otis.

This is one of the examples of the subtle humour sprinkled throughout the novel. Mrs. Umney coming to consciousness more rapidly than normal is quite funny – Mrs. Umney was supposed to be quite unconscious after fainting in fright.
