Why does the pollen grains of plants living in water contain a mucilagenous covering/sheath ?  Exine layer of the pollen grain is already present which is tough and indestructible and is providing protection and preventing the pollen grain from getting wet. Then why ?

Dear student

Please refer the solution below for the said query

The sporopollenin layer in pollen grain is not continuous but is absent at the germ pore. The pollen grain of water plants may absorb water through this germ pore and hence get damaged. That is why, it is protected by extra covering of mucilaginous layer to prevent it from damage by wetting.

Hope this information clears your doubt about the topic.
